Giving Care : Caring

Caring | Facts | Treatment

Giving and receiving care is challenging for both of you and patience and understanding will be required. At the same time, there is reward in giving care - the gratitude and appreciation of the recipient, the satisfaction you derive from helping someone and from seeing the results of your efforts.

Put yourself in your charge’s situation. Try to understand how he or she feels in this new situation. Try not to be impatient even in the most testing of situations. Remember for the care recipient this is an embarrassing situation. Personal hygiene has always been a touchy subject and when someone else takes care of it it is a challenge to the recipient’s integrity.
For you, the recipient, you are dependent on someone else, maybe for the first time in your life. At first it will seem humiliating, embarrassing; in time you will get used to the idea and accept it as a fact of life. Try to remember to express your appreciation – a thank - you, a smile, a gesture, some token of your gratitude now and then.

Having a weak bladder is not an illness. It is a condition brought about by one or more factors. If not treatable with, for example, exercises and training or medication, protection is available. Selecting the right products will facilitate hygiene care routines both for the user and the carer. Be selective. Aim for quality and dignity. There is no reason to accept poorly performing products that are humiliating to use.
